Microchips are a safe and affordable way of identifying your cat. Unlike collars and tags which can be lost, microchips are permanent. Cats that are microchipped are able to be returned to their homes quickly and efficiently should they ever become lost.
Microchips are about the size of a grain of uncooked rice. They are implanted/injected under your cats skin by a veterinarian. Each microchip has a unique barcode which is linked to family details (addresses and phone numbers) through a national registry. At the Rowville Veterinary Clinic we use 'Central Animal Records' which is accessible across Australia.
Microchips are read using a scanner. This is similar to scanning products at the supermarket! If a lost cat is presented to the clinic, we immediately scan the pet. If a microchip is found, we call Central Animal Records, get the pets family details and contact the family ASAP. If the cat is not microchipped we are obliged to call the council and the cat is taken to the local pound. Clearly, having your cat microchipped ensures a quick and safe return home!
Microchipping can be performed in a routine consultation or vaccination. Alternatively, some owners choose to microchip their cats at the time of desexing. The local council offers a discounted council registration rate to all microchipped cats.
If you would like your cat microchipped please contact the clinic.
