'Desexing' is a surgical procedure performed under general anaesthetic in our sterile surgical suite. In females it is called 'speying' and in males it is called 'castration.' Speying involves removal of the ovaries and the uterus. This procedure is called an ovariohysterectomy. Speying your female cat reduces unwanted pregnancies and litters. It stops the female coming 'into heat.' A female cat on heat attracts a lot of male attention. These males often fight each other for her, call loudly for her at night and spray to mark their territory. In heat females also often wander in search of a mate therefore speying her reduces wandering.
Speying also eliminates the chance of cancers and infections of the ovary and the uterus.
Castration involves removal of the testicles. This procedure is called an orchiectomy. Castrating your cat reduces his desire to wander in search of females, his desire to mark/spray his territory and reduces his desire to fight with other cats.
Castration also eliminates the chance of testicular cancers.
And finally, the council provides a significant discount for council registration of all pets that are desexed.
At the Rowville Veterinary Clinic we recommend desexing your pet at 6 months of age. Adult animals may be desexed at anytime. If you have any further questions, please contact the clinic.
