Microchips are a safe and affordable way of identifying your pet. Unlike collars and tags which can be lost, microchips are permanent. Pets that are microchipped are able to be returned to their homes quickly and efficiently should they ever become lost.
Microchips are about the size of a grain of uncooked rice. They are implanted/injected under your pets skin by a veterinarian. Any pet can be microchipped. Each microchip has a unique barcode which is linked to family details (addresses and phone numbers) through a national registry. At the Rowville Veterinary Clinic we use 'Central Animal Records' which is accessible across Australia.
Microchips are read using a scanner. This is similar to scanning products at the supermarket! If a lost pet is presented to the clinic, we immediately scan the pet. If a microchip is found, we call Central Animal Records, get the pets family details and contact the family ASAP. If the pet is not microchipped we are obliged to call the council and the pet is taken to the local pound. Clearly, having your pet microchipped ensures a quick and safe return home!
Microchipping can be perfomed in a routine consultation or vaccination. Alternatively, some owners choose to microchip their pets at the time of desexing. The local council offers a discounted council registration rate to all microchipped pets.
If you would like your pet microchipped please contact the clinic.
